Tis the season', right? It's AAPI month, though, let's be real, supporting the community and history should be year-round. However, it even sprung me only this month, an Asian woman, to create this resource for y'all in May, so having the month of appreciation as a reminder is helpful.

Now, though this guide has ATX specific information, some of these tips such as supporting by following AAPI creators, shopping, and donating can be done anywhere, anytime.

Where do I start? First off, what do you enjoy? Committing your support for an activity you dislike isn't sustainable. It's easier to incorporate an activity you enjoy into your work and there are a ways you can do that.

Enjoying local restaurants

Probably my favorite way, grab a bite with your family or friends, even a potential solo date. How do I found out if it's Asian-Owned? Do512 has this wonderful resource, however, I will note as a critique that they didn't include many South Asian spots or one of my recent faves Wu Chow, on this list.

So here's a few they didn't catch:

If you're looking for more, I recommend following A Taste of Koko, who is also a great Asian influencer to follow and share your support.

Following Asian Creators

Influencers, Artists, Authors, Artisans, Musicians, and more!

I love fiction, so the easiest way for me to support is by reading, watching YouTube videos, Television, and Movies. Both Asian and Asian diaspora creators. For example, I am listening to Stephanie Soo's Rotten Mango podcast as I write this article.

I've written a few resources to help find creators such as the authors of color article featuring AAPI authors I'm currently loving. I also have an article on diverse TV shows which includes those with AAPI writers and actors. The Cold Tea Collective collected a list of TV and Movie adaptations of books by Asian authors. Special shout out to sit-com which I've re-watched Superstore so many times and it wouldn't be the same without Kaliko Kauahi, Nichole Sakura, Chris Grace, and Nico Santos.

Musicians? Another thing you can listen to anywhere, anytime. I have not collected ATX local musicians so if any of them are, that was a happy accident.

I am trying to gather a list of of local artists and artisans but it's going to take a while!

Purchasing! Support with your dollars

Grocery stores? Artisans? Etsy has a feature of Asian Owned Shops and Do512 includes Asian Owned Shops and Services in their article.

Once again I saw the Do512 article missing out South Asian and other stores/businesses:

After writing this, I realized I don't know that much about South Asian shops and services in Austin . . . so stay tuned on what I learn!

Learning!

So many resources on the Global and National level, but very little that is ATX specific. For general information check out the Asia Society, Asia Times, and more!

There is such a deficit that I might later post some of my own research about the contribution Asian Americans have made to the Tech Industry, which we all know, has a major Austin hub. Many folks, such as my parents, immigrated to Austin due to the demand for tech workers in the 80s and this has had a significant impact on the cultural fabric of this city.

Donating

Still searching but this resources has a good set of organizations to support nationally and locally. Additionally, World Relief provides support for refugees in Austin.

If you know other organizations, please let me know!

These are just a few of the ways to support your community! Are there other ways you contribute? Please let me know in the comments.
